Tramway Rabat Salé
The Rabat–Salé tramway is a rail-based transport system designed to serve the residents of the urban agglomeration of Rabat and Salé.
Inaugurated by His Majesty King Mohammed VI, may God assist Him, on May 18, 2011, and officially opened for commercial service on May 23, 2011, this project represents one of the most suitable solutions to the urban transport challenges in both cities, as it meets the growing demand for mobility and provides a genuine alternative to the use of private cars.
Aimed at facilitating traffic flow and mobility, as well as strengthening the connection between the two riverbanks through environmentally friendly, safe, and reliable means of transportation, this project is among the priority initiatives within the framework of the development and enhancement of the Bouregreg Valley.
The current tramway network consists of two lines with a total length of 19.5 km and includes 31 stations. It serves the main urban hubs with high population density and mobility needs, such as university districts, hospitals, government offices, city centers, and major bus and train stations.
The tram cars, each 32 meters long, feature a design that meets international standards, equipped with air conditioning systems and full accessibility for people with special needs.
The project, whose construction was launched by His Majesty King Mohammed VI, may God assist Him, on December 23, 2007, was carried out under the supervision of the Bouregreg Valley Development Agency, in partnership with the municipalities of Rabat and Salé.
Since January 2009, the Rabat-Salé Tramway Company — which includes both municipalities among its shareholders — has been responsible for managing and overseeing the project’s operations.
The tramway operates along two main lines:
– The main urban line extends from the Karima district in Salé to the Al Irfane district in Rabat, covering a distance of 11.7 km. It serves the main hubs of both cities through 22 stations, with a total travel time of 36 minutes.
– Another line serves densely populated neighborhoods such as Yaâcoub El Mansour in Rabat and Bettana in Salé, over a distance of 7.8 km with 14 stations. The total travel time on this line is approximately 25 minutes.
The average frequency of the tramway is 8 minutes on each operational section, while it reaches 4 minutes on the shared segment (from Bab Lamrissa to Al Joulane Square). All lines are double-tracked, allowing for simultaneous outbound and return journeys.
Studies are still ongoing to extend the tramway lines to reach new areas toward Témara and Sala Al Jadida.
